Yesterday, the Wilshire Grand hit a big official milestone in Downtown LA’s Financial District, as its concrete and steel core was completed (aka topped out) after about two years of work. The tower, which measures 826 feet tall now and will be 1,009 feet once its huge spire is in place, is 60 percent complete as of yesterday, according to a release for the topping out ceremony. When it’s finished, it’ll be the new tallest tower in the western US.

In honor of the lofty tower leveling up, below are some of the best recent shots of the grown-up Wilshire Grand from Instagram and Twitter—many of them from yesterday’s big topping out event—to show the progress on what’s soon to be the West Coast’s tallest tower (only technically; its spire is all that’ll make it taller than the nearby US Bank Tower).

The next big milestone for the tower, designed by architecture firm AC Martin, might not be too far off. Downtown blogger/broker Brigham Yen (whose late February intel on the topping out date was correct) hears that by the end of this month, the Wilshire Grand should reach “electrified” status, meaning all the windows will be installed and the electricity can be turned on inside.

The tower’s opening date was revealed yesterday to be a year away, on March 8, 2017, says the LA Times. When complete, the Wilshire Grand will hold 900 luxurious hotel rooms, a seventieth-floor sky lobby, a rooftop pool, office space, and ballrooms.

I will be on site today as the last steel beam is lifted into place on the tallest tower west of Chicago. It should be quite a ceremony!
