Wall-to-wall floral carpet and outdated ‘70s paneling once made a total mess of this turn-of-the-century house, built in 1900, says listing agent Carolyn Ryden. But a young couple saw its potential and totally spiffed up the place to the point that it now looks fit for a Pottery Barn catalog.

Renovations on the four bedroom, three bathroom property at 50 Park Avenue in Sierra Madre took three years. The sellers stripped off that paneling to reveal original beadboard wainscoting and replaced the carpet with hardwood floors. They left other lovely original features intact, too: vaulted wood ceilings in the dining room, beadboard ceiling in kitchen, a clawfoot tub in the master bathroom.

The kitchen’s french doorsopen to a redwood deck, oak trees, and a vegetable garden. The lot totals 8,350-square-feet, and it’s listed for $1.26 million. That’s nearly double the amount— $715,000—paid in 2013.
