Pump up those tires, Los Angeles, because Metro is pushing to fund a whopping 17 car-free, open streets events to take place county-wide through the end of 2018. Streetsblog LA reports that Metro’s planning and programming committee gave the green light to spending $4 million on the events; the agency’s board of directors is expected to give final approval at its meeting next week.

These CicLAvias and CicLAvia-style events shut down sections of road to cars and open them up to people on foot, on bikes, on basically any human-powered, non-car transport. The events range in length; Santa Monica’s first open streets event this past June measured just two miles, while a postponed San Gabriel Valley route was slated to take over 17 miles of road from South Pasadena to Asuza. (The committee approved additional funds to help the SGV event take place.)

Metro’s approved the following events, which are listed in the order that Metro has ranked them (not in chronological order):

  1. West Hollywood: CicLAvia: Meet the Hollywoods (5.5 miles, Spring 2018)
  2. Burbank: Burbank on the Boulevard (3.3 miles, Spring 2017)
  3. Culver City: CicLAvia: Culver City to the Beach (6.6 miles, Spring 2017)
