We’re getting our first good look at a new hotel in an unglamorousspot in Echo Park, thanks to city documents spotted by Urbanize LA.

It will be built in the crook of an onramp to the 101 Freeway, and new renderings are honest about the congested freeway view that hotel guests will enjoy (or not) on its north-facing side: One of the images shows a few rows of cars, basically parked on the 101 in the background.

The hotel on Palo Alto Street, on the border of Echo Park and Historic Filipinotown, is just off Glendale Boulevard, north of Temple Street, where a number of new residential and mixed-use projects are in various stages of development. It was previously occupied by an office building that burned down in a 2012 fire.

The Real Deal has reported that the hotel project’s developer, Morgan’s Legacy LLC, is connected to Hollywood Inn Express South, a budget hotel near Alvarado and Beverly in Westlake. Planning documents for the Echo Park hotel list the applicant as AJ Patel, who owns the Hollywood Inn Express.

The boxy hotel will rise four stories high and hold 88 rooms, plus amenities including a cafe, terrace, and pool deck. There will be one level of underground parking for 51 cars and 24 bikes. The project was designed by the LA-based architecture firm Gene Fong Associates.
