Proposed Crenshaw Boulevard project could bring 220 new apartments to the South Bay

More than 200 new apartments could be on the way to Crenshaw Boulevard on the border of South Bay communities Lomita and Torrance. A relatively dense project for the area, the Daily Breeze reports that it’s already attracting scorn from residents concerned about its potential impact on traffic.

According to an environmental report published by Lomita’s planning department last week, the complex will include 220 units of housing spread across five floors. Additionally, an on-site parking garage would include spaces for 409 vehicles.

Proposed by developer Picerne Real Estate Group, the project would rise at the intersection of Crenshaw and Lomita Boulevard. Currently, the project site serves as an equipment rental facility.

Lomita planning officials have already received dozens of letters from local residents who oppose the project. Many cite concerns about increased traffic, neighborhood character, or the project’s proximity to a church-run daycare nearby.

Even Torrance Community Development Director Jeffrey Gibson has weighed in, complaining that the development as currently proposed will increase traffic on residential streets in Torrance.

The Breeze reports that Lomita planners will likely recommend approval of the project in spite of these complaints, with the city council set to make the final decision this fall.

If approved, the project would offer 35 studios, 134 one-bedrooms, and 51 two-bedroom units. Amenities for residents would include a swimming pool, fitness center, rooftop deck, and community room.
