Developed in the 1920s by real estate magnate C.E. Toberman, Outpost Estates is best known as a bastion of Spanish and Mediterranean Revival architecture. But the hilly enclave nestled between Runyon Canyon and Cahuenga Boulevard also contains a fine array of midcentury moderns, such as this attractive specimen on Chelan Drive, now available for rent.

The three-bedroom, two-bath post and beam was designed in 1958 by Barry Gittelson, the USC-trained architect of West Hollywood’s Bodhi Tree Bookstore as well as homes in Malibu, Oregon, and Mexico.

Subject of a story in the Los Angeles Times’ Home magazine, it features vaulted, wood-beamed ceilings, walls of glass, a gas and wood-burning fireplace, an updated kitchen with quartz countertops, a Japanese-inspired master bath, a two-car carport, and dramatic hillside views.

The .42-acre property is asking a monthly rent of $5,500.
