Developer Related Companies unveiled new renderings today of a long-delayed mixed-use development across the street from Downtown’s Walt Disney Concert Hall. New images of the Frank Gehry-designed Grand Avenue Project come with confirmation that the new development will begin construction this fall.

The project, now called The Grand, will bring a shops, a movie theater, and a 20-story, 314-room Equinox hotel to the parcel at First and Grand, occupied now by a parking structure.

The development will also include a 39-story tower with 113 condos and 323 apartments. Twenty percent of the apartments will be available to low-income tenants, who will pay subsidized rents, says the Los Angeles Times.

According to Related, construction will wrap up in 2021.

With the completion of The Grand, architect Frank Gehry’s original vision for the Walt Disney Concert Hall will come to fruition. The venue was originally supposed to have live projections from across the street displayed on its facade, according to the LA Times.

Once The Grand is finished, “You close that piece of Grand Avenue, put some chairs out there and you’ve got something special. We’re not just building buildings, we’re building places,” Gehry told the LATimes.

The Grand Avenue project was planned as a multi-parcel project that would be constructed in phases. Other pieces of the project have been completed, including the Emerson apartments and Grand Park.

When The Grand is finally built, there will be just one more parcel missing from the puzzle: a parking lot at 120 South Olive Street. Plans for that site have yet to be announced.
