Los Angeles World Airports, which owns and operates Los Angeles International Airport, is working to gradually develop a huge swath of its vacant land in Westchester. Today, it announced a step forward: It’s looking for proposals to redevelop 93 acres just north of LAX and Westchester Parkway.

That’s just about one-third of the 340 vacant acres it’s eventually planning to develop with a mix of offices and shops, plus green space and pedestrian and bike areas.

For now, LAWA is seeking proposals from developers only for two parcels, called areas 1 and 2.

Area 1 is zoned for office space but could also be used as recreational space, meaning parks or sports fields are possibilities too. The city of Los Angeles is finalizing plans to put a stormwater treatment facility underground there, but the area above the facility could be used as a park or other recreation space.

Area 2 is also zoned for a low-density, landscaped office campus. “The westernmost portion of this Area is designated as recreational open space intended for additional community playing fields and associated parking,” say LAWA documents.

An update to the Rios Clementi Hale Studios-designed master plan for the entire project area was released in June 2016. The plan calls for a three-mile pedestrian path connecting Westchester to Playa del Rey and the beach, up to 49 acres of open space, and pedestrian connections through the development.
