Big Hollywood mixed-user on Santa Monica Boulevard steps forward

A project from Canadian developer Onni is building its forward momentum with a scheduled appearance before the Los Angeles City Council’s Planning and Land Use Management Committee this week.

The project at 6901 Santa Monica Boulevard would bring a seven-story residential mixed-user to the property, occupied now by offices and a rental car lot.

The new complex would hold 231 housing units, including 15 for very-low income tenants. The ground floor would hold 15,000 square feet of retail space. Parking would be provided by a 390-space, partially underground garage.

Roschen VanCleeve Architects has given the building what was previously described as an “industrial loft-style” look.

The developer is asking for permission to build bigger and denser than zoning codes allow, and it appears it’s going to get the go-ahead. Mayor Eric Garcetti already signed off on those requests; now the developer needs to get the green light from the full council.

The project would rise just west of Highland Avenue, on the border of Hollywood and West Hollywood. The site is bookended by a roughly five-story office building and a Shakey’s pizza restaurant.
